LEFT AND RIGHT DOOR SKINS LOWER REPLACEMENT SECTIONS. ENTIRE DOOR SKINS AVAILABLE IF NEEDED.
THE BOTTOM LINE
HERE IS WHAT TO DO: SEND ME YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION. I WILL PUT YOUR NAME ON THE LIST. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED. WHEN THE TIME COMES TO GET STARTED, I WILL CALL OR E-MAIL YOU TO SEND YOUR MONEY IN THE ORDER OF CONTACT. YOU WILL HAVE SET ASIDE YOUR MONEY SO YOU DON'T LOSE YOUR PLACE IN THE LINE WAITING TO SAVE UP SOME MORE. YOUR PROJECT WILL ADVANCE BASED ON WHEN YOUR CHEQUE (CDN.) OR US POSTAL MONEY ORDER CLEARS MY BANK. IF IT'S A TIE, I'LL REVERT BACK TO THE LIST TO SEE WHO CONTACTED ME FIRST.
If we have the part prototyped and ready for production, then the list price is the price plus packing, shipping, insurance and if you're a US citizen, you may get dinged for Duty. That is a hit or miss thing and there is no way to tell if you'll be charged. Only two of my stripe customers were charged duty in my 20 years of intermittent operation. I only make the stripes when there is enough demand. The parts will be the same thing except that I don't have to wait for a production run. Mind you, if a group of you got together and put in an order that could be a production run, that would lower the price from the list price substantially because the set up time would be spread across the entire order.
I expect though that most people will order what they need as they need them. That means the pricing is based on a production run of one.
As I get the parts produced, I'll post pricing here on this page.
Right now three commonly needed parts are in progress. Once they're done, I'll photograph them and post them here so you can see how they look. The rear quarter is going to be installed on my #1 Machine and Junior Carriere who is doing the work will shoot more photos of it and report on the fit and quality.
The door skins are being installed on a couple of Machine doors from a long extinct Machine. The doors will be for sale once complete. Assume the doors do not have the guts in them but the guts are available in plenty of places including the glass. Besides I have most of the parts anyway.
1. Right Rear Quarter - lower half - price to be announced
2. Left and Right Door Skins - price to be announced
As I stated on Facebook, we can make door frames and the interior walls of the cars if they're rotted as long as we have the original shape to work from. There is no reason to send a car to the crusher because you don't have the needed parts. All you need is the money to pay for them and someone to install them for you. The big restoration bill you'll likely face will be from the guy doing the welding or the paint. The body work should be minimal and that's usually the worst part by a lot.
I'm not averse to adding strength to parts where there was little strength originally - like the tops of Rebel fenders. They were and still are notorious for bending when someone leans on them. Some fenders came from the factory already dented. I would find that embarrassing.
BLANKS WE HAVE ON HAND TO CREATE NEW PARTS WITH
1. REBEL MACHINE hood
2. Trunk floor with back of diff hump and complete rear fascia
3. NOS right rear quarter
4. Rusty RWB Left rear quarter
5. Front frame rails
6. Inner fenders
7. upper fender troughs
8. Entire architecture for front fascia for headlight pots
9. Rocker panels, inner and outer
10. An entire Rebel SST that can be cut apart and put back together to get any other parts we need.
If this site and this business is to survive and fulfill what I think we all want it to do, I need orders. Waiting until next summer might seem convenient but if there is no cash flow, there will be no next summer and no car parts many of you desperately need. Just like any business, start-ups are always a fragile time and luck has a lot to do with success. Unlike the Rebel Machine Stripe business which could only operate on a bi-annual basis, there are way more people and thus overhead involved in this venture even though the shop is smaller. It's also an incredibly primitive business in some ways because every piece is hand formed. The skill required is almost non-existent in the general workforce. The equipment is the same equipment I worked on when I was 19 in 1969 and it was old then.
Right side floor pan welded in place. Another perfect fit.
One piece, 18 gauge steel ready for installation!
$600 USD EA.
The door skins come with a Z bar that runs the length of the door underneath as a brace for the bottom edge of the door skin.
$100 USD EA.
I'm not cutting the drain holes out of the pans unless specifically requested and backed up with photographic proof that the buyer has the correct drain plugs in good enough shape to install. I can't make the plugs so they have to be either from a good donor floor. In most cases the drain plugs have proven too rusted to be worth installing or worth drilling the holes for.
As well, the only reason for the drain plugs was to allow the galvanizing coating the body shells were dipped into to drain. That process doesn't happen any more so there is no reason for the drain other than originality that most people will never see. Since the car isn't original once you've added body parts to it the drain hole is useless, especially if you can't fill it with a plug.
18 Gauge sheet steel the same quality as is used on new cars for sheet metal parts,
16 Gauge sheet steel for frame rails
1. There is no warranty of any sort attached to the parts I supply.
2. If the part is defective, you call me and tell me what is wrong. Photos and or a video required. If the part is genuinely defective, it will be replaced when I get the defective part back. As you can imagine, I don't want a bunch of parts in my backyard that don't fit so extreme care will be taken to ensure your part is correct as stated.
3. All orders are cash up front. Prices are in USD.
4. Canadians can pay with cheques. Those orders are shipped after the cheque clears.
5. US customers pay by US POSTAL MONEY ORDER. There is a $700 limit on those so it might take more than one. US bank cheques take up to six months to clear in Canada so I can't accept them. I don't like using Paypal although I've done it from time to time.
6. All orders shipped must be insured.
7. We are not responsible for you or your body man screwing up your part(s).
8. If you screw up your part(s) you will have to replace them at your cost.
Underside of floorpan after being scraped clean of factory undercoating that is murder to remove revealing how moisture crept in between the metal and the undercoating despite AMCs best efforts.
As new parts are made, I'll post them here. Check back from time to time to see what's been done.
PARTS IN PROGRESS
THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO GET INTO THE FRONT OF THE LINE FOR PARTS YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO NEED SOON. THIS CHANCE WON'T COME TWICE.
AMC REBEL MACHINE SHEET METAL
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
An AMC Series 10 two door hardtop body - Danny Dumont Machine cutting some old metal out so new metal can be installed. This was not a seriously rusted car but it did have rust in all the normal areas. Danny is one of those guys who takes automotive restoration to the level of high art. You can also see the undersides of the newly welded in floor pans and new rocker panel sections.
The floor pan before work started. Rust down both sides where the side walls and floors meet. The floor under the gas pedal location hasn't worn through yet but you can see that whole area on the driver's side is about to let go. Same problem to lesser extent on the passenger's side.
I don't know what the turn around time will be yet. The sample parts were in the shop in Monday afternoon. The ready date is the end of the week. I'm just as interested in quick turnaround time as you are since I can't make money twiddling my thumbs and sucking wind while the work creeps forward. I hope that doesn't happen. If it does, we may have to grin and bear it for a while a we develop the business.
New sheet metal has been unavailable for Rebel Machines or any other American Motors product since 1987 except for the odd pieces "archived" by former employees and those buying job lots from decommissioned AMC dealerships or entrepreneurs going way beyond the extra mile to produce them - often risking the family cash to do it. Those far-sighted, intrepid heroes have kept many of us going while a way was found to make new parts in the total absence of the big presses the factory used.
I'm pleased to say that I've joined forces with a company that makes sheet metal for other brands. They make, I sell. They have made AMC parts before and have done a sterling job. They have been making custom parts for many decades and can make anything in sheet metal. New AMC sheet metal parts will be available exclusively through this site. However I'm not going to compete with guys making other parts already. There are too many parts needed that no one's making to be getting into a pricing war or political one-up manship.
Unlike the other guys, I don't care whether your car is a Machine or a Pacer. My passion is to help restore Machines. But owners of other models need help too so I'm hoping we can do business and bring some glorious cars back to life.
If this does well enough it's conceivable a new Rebel Machine or some other unique AMC derivative - (like that Mini van that should have been made/could be made - a 21st Century AMC. If it's possible, I'm going to do it. Let's face it - if all the parts can be made, well alterations can be made and an entire car could be assembled just like the old Stanley Steamer was with less know-how. Dreams I know.
